| What is Scottish Country Dancing? |
Scottish Country Dancing has been around in Scotland for many hundreds of years. It's a happy medium between Highland dancing (where you dance on your own with very precise steps) and Ceilidh dancing (where generally you dance with a partner and where dances are called at all times). If you have done any English Country Dances, Playford dances, American Square dances, they all have similar moves and steps to Scottish Country Dancing. (Some dances are shared across al types.) The music obviously has a very Scottish flavour, and is usually very toe-tapping. It is excellent exercise (weight bearing which is particularly good for ladies) and exercises the brain. It's also very social dancing. Although you have a partner, you usually dance in "sets" (groups) of 8 and often hardly see your partner! All our classes have a musician, either a pianist or an accordionist. All teachers for the adult classes are fully certified Scottish Country Dance Teachers. We have many children's classes for both primary and secondary ages - click here for children's class information. Back to Class Details. |
